A Modest Proposal is a satirical work meant to call attention to the plight of the Irish people under the oppression of the British government. Swift purposefully takes the argument too far in order to make his point about apathy towards to destitute (he suggests all poor families sell their children to the English).  Suggested Level: US (Upper Secondary)

The Magna Carta (Latin for "Great Charter"), limited the power of the monarchy and established a constitutional law in England. This inspired many other government documents, including but not limited to the United States Constitution.  Suggested Level: ALL
